Nuori hoitajatar saapuu 50-luvun Toscanassa syrjäiseen linnaan auttaakseen mykkää perillistä. Verenan tehtävänä on saada äitinsä kuoleman jälkeen traumatisoitunut hiljainen Jakob-poika taas kommunikoimaan. Mutta siihen pyrkiessään hän huomaa joutuvansa vedetyksi yhä syvemmälle linnan salaisuuksiin. Verenalla on epätavallinen herkkyys ja kyky tavoittaa traumatisoituneet lapset, ja tuon kyvyn on huomannut myös erakkomainen Klaus, äskettäin leskeksi jäänyt kuvanveistäjä, joka kaipaa yhteyttä poikaansa. Ensi alkuun Jakob vaikuttaa Verenasta syvästi häiriintyneeltä, mutta tarkkaillessaan tätä pidempään hän huomaa kokevansa jotain sanoinkuvaamatonta. Onko Jakob jonkin kiviseiniin ansaan jääneen ahnaan voiman pauloissa? Vapauttaakseen Jakobin ja itsensä on Verenan kohdattava ylimaallinen persoona, joka on nopeasti kietoutumassa hänen omaansa.
